Even I can't live on gin alone, a hearty stew is just what I need to help recover my strength. I can still cook but I don't have the right ingredients.</spoiler>
  • Epilogue: <spoiler text="Show Epilogue">Old Man Hackett: A few bowls of this stew and I'll be my old self again! I would offer you some but you wouldn't want to catch anything from me. Take my old vest instead, when digging I should wear something a little warmer anyway.</spoiler>

  • Epilogue: <spoiler text="Show Epilogue">Old Man Hackett: Hah, that novice. I'll let you in on a little secret: there was never really any gold in this claim. Why the fuss about those scoundrels? Purely on principle; nobody tries to steal from Old Man Hackett and gets away with it!</spoiler>

Let's try again

Resolve: Hackett's Claim (Nobody steals from Hackett)
  • Requires:
    • Carving out claims (30 minutes)
  • Reward:
    • 23 Experience points
    • 1 skill point
    • $30
  • Quest Text: <spoiler text="Show Text">Old Man Hackett: Come in greenhorn! I have some big plans and if you're willing to help then you can keep part of the profits. I have made a new claim to dig, but as you've probably noticed I'm getting too old for such hard work. However you're young and fit, help me stake out the claim and we're in business... partner.</spoiler>
  • Epilogue: <spoiler text="Show Epilogue">Old Man Hackett: Yes, I can already smell the gold! I can just tell this claim will be more fruitful than the last one. Go rest, tomorrow we'll start digging.</spoiler>

Gold rush

Resolve: Hackett's Claim (Let's try again)

  • Reward:
    • 25 Experience points

  • Quest Text: <spoiler text="Show Text">Old Man Hackett: This is it: soon you'll see there is nothing like the feeling of a promising first claim to secure your treasure. Soon we'll be rich beyond our wildest dreams! Come back when you've found something. Now where have I put that keg from Walker...</spoiler>
  • Epilogue: <spoiler text="Show Epilogue">Old Man Hackett: (With a slur) There you are greenhorn. Come sit down, take a sip. Walker has outdone himself once again. Oh, you've found something already? Show me... that's fantastic! This is... this is just shoddy fool's gold! You thought you could trick me huh? You just wait!

You wake up with a throbbing headache. Hackett has smashed you with the (thankfully empty) keg and left you without a penny for the gold dust. Does anyone know where the old fox has crawled to?</spoiler>

  • Epilogue: <spoiler text="Show Epilogue">Barkeeper Henry Walker: Understood. Seems as if his desire for gold has gotten to his head, and presumably my gin too. In a way I'm not completely innocent in this mess either, so listen carefully: Hackett moves back into that mine during very cold winters, the one where he worked in many years ago. If you find him, bring him back so we can teach him some manners.</spoiler>

  • Epilogue: <spoiler text="Show Epilogue">Old Man Hackett: Argh! You've won today, but don't you start bragging about it.

Hackett clutches his shoulder and slowly moves away. You find the money he owes you in his old saddle bag, as well as an old pickaxe.</spoiler>
