I asked you to NOT disturb me! Ah it's you, {PLAYER_NAME}, forgive me. I have a very difficult problem to solve. Well, there's this farmer, Tobias, up in the mountains... in the northeastern mountains. He's a friend of the family, and was my father's best friend. He never started a family, he is more of a loner... And now it turns out that he has a granddaughter who he really cares about. He reported her to be missing. One morning the girl simply disappeared without leaving a trace... In my opinion, she must have gotten stuck somewhere in a gully or canyon. You know, he taught her to become a shepherdess. Of course, you don't need to ask. If you wish to help, I'd be glad, as always. Not far from here, some Native Americans from the East came to trade. You know, exchanging goods and craftwork. Maybe you can go and trade with them, and of course ask if they know anything about her? Oh, and I heard they have really good cigars. Could you bring me one?
Finish
Alright, I understand. Too bad they don't know anything about the girl or have seen her. But they saw a carriage coming down the mountain, heading west? That could be an important information. You want to go to and visit Tobias with me tomorrow? Great, be ready in the morning and bring our horses. Good night, {PLAYER_NAME}!

Good morning, did you sleep well? I see you've already saddled our horses. Great! I made a sandwich for you, in case we get hungry along the way. Before we leave I still have to write a report. While I do that, can you get me a newspaper which I can read when we take a break along the way? And we also need canteens, right?
Finish
Ah, I am so tired. It has been a really long trip. Did I mention that I hate mountains? You ask me why? Look at me, it's more than 1,400 m above sea level and I can barely breathe. Anyway, we did it, we are here, this is his house. Just remember that Tobias is a bit... eccentric. Many years ago he came here from the Swiss mountains, he was looking for gold to help his ailing mother. If he has a granddaughter, he probably left his child behind, and he never mentioned it to me. Assume that he is a freak who doesn't like anyone. Don't look at me like this, you will do well.

Tobias: Howdy, John. Thanks for coming. I have a picture of my little Helen for you. No, I am not getting emotional… It's just about the sheep, you know. My sheep need her, there is nobody else to bring them to the pasture, or who they can listen to. And who is this? You bring a stranger to my door? Have I asked for it? Ha, no one has any respect for an old man anymore. Sit down, young fella! My sister's daughter, who is living in a big city to the west, came here one day and left Helen with me. Without any word or prior notice. What should I have done? I took her in, and taught her how to handle animals. She made friends with this... shepherd from the neighborhood. I think Peter is his name. She brought me a lot of joy and her laughter was so sweet, even her eyes were laughing! And now it is so quiet here...What can you do? Tobias needs a friend right now, and you are definitely not his friend. You can do something somewhere else though, so you quietly get out of his house. You decide to look around. You go to the pasture, where sheep graze... You search the area, the fields, the canyons and glades that go through.
Finish
John: Where have you been? You took a look around and... What do you have there? Ah, you found something, good, show me. We could need some good news now. This looks like a pink... a pink scarf or maybe a ribbon...Tobias snatches the pink piece of cloth from John's hands.Tobias: Oh, this is her neckerchief, it is definitely hers! It was always tied around her neck. Where did you find it, WHERE?Old Tobias shakes his fists at you.

John: Did you sleep well this time? Haha! I'am sorry, I think this is really funny! I didn't know that old grandpa Tobias would be able to knock you out with just one hit. Haha! Looks like making sheep cheese strengthens your body. Can you take care of the sheep today? It is only for one day, I had promised Tobias that you would do it. This will also give you the opportunity to talk to Peter. Maybe you can find out something about the little girl. Then go down to the city and buy some products. Here is a list. Grandpa gave you 100$ for shopping. You walk the sheep to the pasture, but it is far from being an easy job! They all run in different directions, some to the left, others to the right, and some even run back. You don't know what the heck... How to keep them in line? Now this is ridiculous! You curse and almost scream at them. Then you notice a young boy watching you, laughing discreetly. He introduces himself as Peter and offers you to help you. Now, this is much better. After a while, everything is done and the two of you sit under a tree in the shade and share a piece of cheese. This is a good opportunity to talk...
Finish
John: Did you find out something? Hmm… Her aunt said she would come back for her? But she would have told Tobias if she was taking the girl back... That’s weird. He saw her running towards a meadow in the forest? In that case, we should get going. It is too dangerous here after dark, when the wolves and bears come out hunting.

You and John arrive at the forest meadow. You jump off your horse, take a canteen with water and go into the forest. After a few hundred feet you hear some strange noises and come across... a Moonshiner?! At that moment John pulls out his revolver and shouts:Hands up! Get out of your hut! I will not ask twice!Someone responds with a deep, hoarse voice:I didn't do anything, Mister! Don't shoot me, please. After a while an old and skinny, bearded man comes out, wearing a dusty hat. He holds his arms in the air:This is my home, and this... eh... moonshining... it is just for my own use. I live here alone, you know, and sometimes I drink something, so what. Sometimes even something stronger. Do you want to try?He pours a transparent liquid with a strong aroma into glasses. You and John sniff it and then look at each other. You decide to ask him about the girl:I haven't seen anybody around here, neither man nor woman, neither boy nor girl... No one ever comes here. Hmm... There is a printing shop for newspapers nearby, maybe you can print some posters? Could be worth a try to hang them up along the road. Sooner or later someone might see a little girl walking around all by herself.
Finish
You have asked the local newspaper to publish an article about the missing girl and hung up the posters around the area. There is nothing else you can do. You return to the Moonshiner and after few glasses of his selfmade swill he starts talking:I've been alone almost all my life. My father was a sailor, a great man, always away. I have a brother, but he never came to visit me. He is a preacher. Oh, now I remember what I wanted to tell you, but forgot... When you have been at the newspaper, there was a preacher here. Not my brother, another one. He traveled for two days and came from the west... where the little girl might have gone. Maybe he saw someone or something on his way? A bit further west is a junction, maybe you can catch up to him there?

In the morning you hit the road again, this time in a south-westerly direction, just where the road leads. Along the way you find another piece of a pink ribbon. You start to get even more worried than you already were. What if someone kidnapped little Helen? Where can she be now? After a while you reach the junction. Is someone there? All of a sudden you are being attacked.Bandit: Hey you! Surrender at once! Take everything out of your pockets, your bags, saddlebags... I said everything! Gold, money, diamonds! It is all ours now, hahaha! Look how eagerly they follow my orders! What, is that all you have, you filthy beggars? Mates, can you believe they only have 200$? Oh, is that a gun? Who are you, a sheriff? You don't look like an outlaw...The gang leader nods to his men and then all eight of them attack you and John. Fortunately, you had a second gun, a small pocket revolver, under your vest. You pull it out quickly and fire back, while John draws his knife... Everything happens so fast...

You think you won and the attackers flew the coop, but you are not so sure. During the fight, you were hit on the head and you remember that blood streamed all over your face. You must have blacked out after this blow. It all happened so fast, a lot of adrenaline rushed through your veins and you don't remember much else. It looks like John was seriously wounded. You need some stomach medicine, strong alcohol and something to stitch up John's open wound. A needle would be useful, but where can you get one? Is there a trader around? Don't forget to equip an expensive item to trade with. Maybe a gold ring will suffice?
Finish
John: Didn't know you could even suture wounds... How do you do that? I hope it won’t leave too big of a scar, man. I must say your fighting skills are quite something. I liked how you knocked out this giant of a man, ha! Ah, and now I know where this terrible stomach ache is from... this giant has hit me hard in the belly, right here...John points to his stomach with his hand.John: Look, one of them has lost a letter. Seems the preacher has also met them. I'm sorry, I can't go anywhere right now, I need to rest a bit. Fine, I'll go with you, but first read the letter.

Maybe he helped her to escape the gang. After a few hours you arrive at your destination. You help John to get off the horse and leave him on the stairs of the abandoned saloon. You walk over to the old hotel building, following some fresh hoof tracks. Before entering the building, you meet a tall, handsome man dressed in black with a blue book in his hand.Man: Who I am? I'm a preacher. I am looking for a place where I can rest and stay with myself and my book. To make a long story short, I want to set up a school for children from villages and farms around here, to give them an equal opportunity to learn, like the children from big cities. I am on my way to Newport, where I hope I will get financial help for my idea. I wanted to take a break here, because this is where my grandmother and mother grew up. I always wanted to see this place with my own eyes. It is still beautiful, even if now quiet and empty. If I’ve seen a little girl? I saw a small, black-haired girl with curls, I think she was traveling with her mother or aunt. We travelled together for a bit to the crossroads, where we parted and went our separate ways. They traveled west, but I went northwest. I think they may have gone to Newport. I can help you find them if you help me to raise funds for my school. 200$ would be enough for starters. I invite you to pray with me of course, if you want to.

Man: Ah, thank you on behalf of my future students. It is a generous donation.

You, John and the preacher get to Newport. It is the largest city you have ever seen. How are you supposed to find one little girl here? You accompany the preacher to speak with the mayor of the city about funding the school. After a long discussion, the mayor agrees, but only on certain conditions. He asks you to help him get rid of a few scoundrels that prowl the city's streets and also help with building a new railway station. The city is growing fast and needs a new station where food from the outlying areas can be unloaded and distributed. This will allow the farmers to earn more money from their crops and feed the increasing population.
Finish
After you are done and get back to the preacher and the mayor, you meet a little girl in a pink and black shepherdess dress. The girl is sitting on a chair, dangling her legs back and forth and looking at you with an easy smile.

Little girl: Is grandpa looking for me and sent you to find me? Ok... I miss him a lot, but I can't go back to him, not now. I want to go to school, and there is no school there. And when I tended the sheep, I heard two men say that they want to seize some land which belongs to a mountain farmer. I think they were talking about my grandfather. - The girl starts to cry, but she’s still talking to you -. They dropped some papers, but I can't read them. I don't know what is written on them, but I will not let them take grandpa's home! I will fight them, but first I have to learn how to read and write and count. Otherwise I will have no chance of winning this fight. No, I didn't tell this to anyone but my aunt. She found a school for me. I know what I've heard, they will fake some sort of documents, and then they will sell grandpa's land to build factories! These are scammers! Poor old grandpa...Mayor: Now, don't you cry, little girl. I have good news for you. This preacher here will open a school near your grandpa's home. If you and your grandpa convince your aunt, surely there will be a place for you in his class, right Reverend?Preacher: Of course, and it will be the best school in the country! {PLAYER_NAME}, can you talk with her aunt? I have a feeling that she will listen to you.
Finish
John: Helen, you can pack your bags, we are going home!In the morning you, John and little Helen set out on the road again, to get back to the mountains before the sun sets.

Aunt: Oh, and who are you? Helen's grandfather sent you? Do I get that right that he wants her to come back? Hard to believe, he hates children, he hates all people... He always had his sheep, and they were all that mattered to him. He has changed? But quirky people don't change! Hmm... This little Helen really is the devil incarnate... She runs around everywhere, eats with her hands, doesn’t clean her boots, never listens or obeys... All in all, I think I am willing to let her move in with her grandfather permanently, if we agree on some conditions. First of all, she has to come here in the summers to help me with household chores. You know, to compensate me for my loss. Second, I would like to have some Aztec gold and a black Indian necklace, and finally... There was a man who attacked us at the junction. I put a wanted poster out on him. You catch him so I don’t have to pay the bounty.
Finish
Aunt: Oh, thank you so much. Wait a minute... There is something amiss here. I have spent 2,000 $ on the wanted poster and here's only 1,000 $. What taxes? Bah, doesn't matter... Just take this snotty girl and leave.

After a long hike, you reach the house in the mountains. Your horses are definitely tired and need a rest. You hope that this time Grandpa Tobias will not swing his fist at you again. Helen gets off her horse, then immediately runs towards her grandfather and jumps into his arms. Old Tobias is so moved that he bursts into tears. You think that Helen will certainly be happier here than in Newport. You inform her grandfather about Helen's school and about the things Helen has heard about his farm...Tobias: John, can it be true what Helen says? Can you find out? I want to give her everything I have, but if I lose my farm, there is nothing left... Where should we go then?John: Well, you don't need to ask. We are already investigating what is going on. Tomorrow, {PLAYER_NAME} will join a meeting with the people who want to buy the land. He will go wolf hunting with these men, undercover of course...
Finish
John: Tobias, you know I can't tell you anything right now. You have to be a bit patient, we almost have them. The investigation is still going on. We'll be back as soon as we find out more. With John, you are preparing an ambush based on the information you have gathered.

Hello, my hero! How do you feel after this hard fight? You don't remember anything, do you? Well, you get knocked out way too often lately. I heard you tracked down and found a little girl, got her into school and saved the farm she is living on? Is this true? Of course, John told me everything. This is a great story! You should write a book about your adventures. You know, you have intrigued everyone with your hero things. I have organized a small party, something like a fair, and collected almost 5000 $ for the girl's studies. It will definitely be useful. Maybe someday she’ll become a lawyer, who knows? Look, John is coming, and he is quite cheerful.John: Hey, sleepyhead. How's it going, {PLAYER_NAME}? Good to hear that after all, ha! I am also fine. You know whom I arrested today because of you? The land dealers. The documents they presented were fake. They just wanted to steal the land from the old man and sell it. Are you going to visit Helen and Tobias with me?
Finish
It's always good when a story ends well. You should rest before you go on your next adventure and check out the Oktoberfest party. The tables are set with pastries, cheese and sausages. And there is great beer of course. This is the perfect time to relax.

A joyful Helen welcomes you on the doorstep. You tell her about Maya's fair, and that all of you want to help her and her grandfather. You also tell her that you and John have caught the racketeers and she doesn't have to worry anymore about her grandfather's farm being taken away. The girl whispers something into your ear, grabs your hand and takes you out to the pasture, where she asks if you could help her fix the fence, because her grandfather isn't feeling too good lately.
Finish
Tobias: Yes, I've felt worse lately. Must have been the stress with the farm. Thank you for your help. I wasn't really nice to you at the beginning. To make up for it, I have made a special water bottle for you. I hope it will be useful in your next endeavors. See you around, someday.
