Howdy {PLAYER_NAME},I just received a telegram from Europe that a scientist has discovered a explosive more powerful than any explosive ever seen. He calls it TNT, it is an abbreviation for some complex chemical name... to be honest I don't really care about these details anyway, I just want to find out if every bandit in The Wild West can simply craft this dangerous item. That would make a horrible future for the mines in this county.But before you can start trying out these recipes I need to find somebody that has more knowledge about this topic. In the meantime you could try finding some gunpowder. When you have enough of it you should try to start a safe explosion in the old mine.

Howdy {PLAYER_NAME},the sheriff already told me about his plans. If you want to hear my honest opinion: You both are crazy. Creating these things outside of a controlled environment is pretty dangerous! Therefore you won't be making the new explosive directly, instead we are going to start with making some gunpowder ourselves. To start the synthesis we need some of the following things listed in my book: Saltpeter, Sulfur and some charcoal. It is very important to use them in the right ratios, otherwise they might blew more than just the mine.

Did you know that gunpowder was already invented in the Chinese empire? In 1326 the first reports of gunpowder use in weapons occurred, since then it started to become more and more popular. {PLAYER_NAME}, would like you to make some dynamite. The dynamite was discovered by Alfred Nobel, the patent for this synthesis is from 1867 and you need some nitroglycerin, diatomite and soda for it. Unfortunately finding these things in the Wild West is pretty difficult and we want to focus on the TNT, therefore we won't make dynamite today. But there is something else you can make until I have found all the details about TNT. For making flash cotton you only need some cotton, sulfuric acid and nitric acid. Come back when you have all the ingredients. Remember, you can melt ice to have water!

I see you have returned. If you put the cotton into a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid you will be able to nitrate the cellulose that the cotton is made of. Afterwards you need to rinse out the cotton with water and let it dry for a day. Why don't you visit John tomorrow to show him what you made?

{PLAYER_NAME}, while you were away I made some plans for our synthesis. TNT means Trinitrotoluene and it can be synthesized by nitrating toluene. You already did a nitration when you were making flash cotton, but first we need something to nitrate which is the toluene. Toluene can be found in oil next to some other chemicals like alkanes found in petrol and kerosene, as well as benzene, xylene or tar which means we need to isolate it afterwards. But first you need to get some oil. Can you prepare a map for our trip?

Before we can start, you need to bring more sulfuric and nitric acid. You can find some saltpeter and sulfur in the mines, a friend of mine knows how to turn these into acids.

To make TNT you will need high temperatures, therefore you should make a fire to heat your reaction mixture which should be in some kind of pot. You can't use the toluene and the mixture of acids in these high concentrations, therefore you should use some alcohol as a solvent. You should prepare the mixture in a safe place, away from cities, just in case something goes wrong. We should go there by train, but first please fix a small fault. Good luck!

Howdy {PLAYER_NAME}, you have returned but I haven't heard a big bang. Can you tell me what happened? John listens calm as you report that the mixture did not ignite. It seems like making TNT without the pure chemicals is pretty difficult. John and you both know that most of the bandits are not smart enough to understand the instructions the teacher gave you. It seems like making some dynamite is still the easiest way to blow up a mine.
