Hello {PLAYER_NAME}, good to see you! I have just arrived from Potomac county where I was visiting my cousin, Archibald Brown. He is the priest in Carson Village, pretty busy old lad. The priest of the neighboring town Auburn has gone missing. Archibald has taken care of Auburn for two months now, but he gets more and more exhausted and needs some help. You are an honest man, {PLAYER_NAME}. Could you do me a favor and offer Archibald some help?
Finish
I knew that you wouldn't let down a priest. Let me just finish a letter to my cousin. Oh and something else, please meet with him unarmed. The first impression is the most important!

Father Brown: John, I mean Sheriff Fitzburn has surely told you how difficult it was for me to minister to both parishes in Potomac County. Father Seavers' sudden disappearance was a shock to all of us, he was here with us for over 30 years and was also my mentor.Brown is silent during your ride from Carson Village to Auburn.Father Brown: Hmm, Seavers would not want me to hang my head in despair! When I came here from the coast, still wet behind my ears, one of the first lessons he taught me was that the work of a man of the faith does not end with holy words out here on the frontier. More often than not you have to help the people with worldly problems as well. I haven't been to Auburn for some days, I am sure we will find something to do.
Finish
What a day! You worked a good bit and the people seem to like you. Don't mind them being a bit reserved at first, the residents of Auburn can be a bit peculiar sometimes. Come on, I will show you the vicarage and then I will return to Carson Village. I'll return here tomorrow.

Father Brown: Good Morning! Are you ready to see more of Auburn? Of course it is very important to take good care of the elderly members of the parish who can not walk so well anymore. Let's visit Ann Catherine Young, a good soul who lives a bit outside of Auburn. After a short ride you knock at Mrs. Young's door.Ann Catherine Young: Oh, hello Father. Is this the young gentleman that will assist you until Father Seaver is back with us?Father Brown: Umm, yes. May I introduce: {PLAYER_NAME}. I am afraid to say that we should prepare for the worst when it comes to Father Seaver. The marshal already cancelled the search for him.Ann Catherine Young: Hogwash! The good Father will come back. An old woman like myself should not be teaching you lessons about keeping your hopes up!Father Brown: You are right. What can {PLAYER_NAME} and I do for you today?Ann Catherine Young: Well, if you ask, I would be glad if you could help me with my garden. The produce has to be harvested soon so I can start making preserves.
Finish
Ann Catherine Young: Oh my, what a good job you did! I'm sorry, but I have no money...Father Brown: Don't you worry, that is not necess...Ann Catherine Young: ...but I have this Bible for the newest member of our parish. It once belonged to my husband, I hope it will bring you good luck!

Gradually you get to know the people of Auburn. They are friendly towards you but still reserved. Most of them are not as open towards you as Mrs. Young.

You wake up with a terrible headache, your head is dripping wet, seemingly someone emptied a bucket of cold water over you. The man holding the bucket is called Craig and he is stepping aside to give room for another man. He seems to be the leader of the two. Peter Hirst: Hello Priest, my name is Peter Hirst, you have already met my brother Craig. "I beg your pardon for the discomfort but I think you have something that belongs to me. You know Father Seaver... No wait, how stupid of me, you never got to know him. He took something from me. It is of no value to you or him or anyone but me. I think I will kill you for that. Yes, killing sounds good. I won't tell you what it is, that's none of your business. Now get up and get me all metal items in this house. I am waiting, and don't try to pull something funny!
Finish
While you turning the whole vicarage upside down looking for metal items, you find a small piece of paper in one of the pillows, it has a bible verse on it. You take it without attracting any attention before you bring Hirst what he asked for.Peter Hirst: Oh, that is a lot of junk. You should pray that it includes the thing I'm looking for. Otherwise you are in a lot of trouble. We'll hear from each other...

It is already dark when you finally report your encounter to Father Brown.Father Brown: Terrible, just terrible! Peter Hirst and his goons are causing trouble for some time now, even before I came here. Please show me the piece of paper you found.
Finish
Father Brown: 'For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.' Romans, 7:19. What could this mean? Sounds like an excuse to me. This piece of paper was so well hidden, it must have a meaning, but what is it? 'Wants to do good but doesn't', that can mean everything. Seaver seems to have been in some deep trouble but that doesn't help us any though.Romans... Romans... Some older parishioners told me about an Italian family that had been living around here. They came originally from Rome and were famous for their cooking, but that has been some time ago.Get some rest now, I will ask around tomorrow so please come back around noon.

You encounter a sad scenery: Nine tombstones in the middle of nowhere, someone crafted a little wooden sign: 'Here lies the Trevisano family'.Father Brown: We have to find out what happened here, it sure does look like a terrible crime. Let's consult with Mrs. Young, she knows everyone around here since decades. She can help us more than the silent villagers.

Father Brown: Hello Ann, can you tell us something about the Trevisanos?Mrs. Young looks really frightened after you mention the name. She hesitated a little but then started to talk.Ann Catherine Young: The Trevisanos? Why do you want to know about them? They were wonderful people, proud, friendly, godly. The father, a great baker, the mother a talented seamstress. They also had a little, well-running tavern. All children were doing well at school, very polite.Father Brown: But they are all dead, what happened?Ann Catherine Young: Nobody knows! Some say that they were taken by evil spirits while others say they made a pact with the devil. Stupid gossip! The family were religious like angels. One day the dead bodies of all 8 of them were found near a road 20 miles east of here. The cause of death was never discovered, there were no signs of wounds. They were buried right at that spot. The scariest stories were invented and spread. What an undeserved ending of a noble family. It has been 7 years now...
Finish
Father Brown: You mentioned 8 family members, are you sure? I mean, it was a long time ago...Ann Catherine Young: I'm absolutely sure that it was 8 people. There were 8 tombstones the last time I was there, so I know that I can't be wrong. Father Brown: Thank you, Ann! {PLAYER_NAME}, you know what we have to do.

The message of forgiveness has made me reconsider my life. I want to start anew and get rid of the guilt that I carry around for so long now: Being part in the murder of 8 innocent people. This metal tin is the key to their death. It belongs to the mastermind behind the gruesome crime. Please contact the marshal so I can reveal myself and help to convict all accomplices.- A lost son'Father Brown: There seems to be traces of a grey powder in the tin. Maybe arsenic? Together with state marshal Garrett Rooney you wait in a side room of the church. Finally, the door opens and Father Brown brings in Craig Hirst. After Brown leaves you again, Craig turns to you.Craig Hirst: Good evening. I guess I owe you an explanation...
Finish
Craig Hirst: This is the story of the events 7 years ago. The Trevisano family was well-liked and while their tavern was running better and better, my brother's saloon was bringing in less and less money. He then started to work as an arts dealer, or shall I say thief and smuggler? One day, Peter accepted an invitation from the Trevisanos. They wanted to reconcile and propose some business cooperation, but my brother only wanted the beautiful icons and relics the Trevisanos brought from Italy. Things like that are very rare in the West. Peter suggested a ridiculously low price to buy them. Of course they refused the offer but it was too late already. Peter poisoned a cake in the kitchen which was meant for a family picnic the next day. And while the Trevisano family died somewhere in the wilderness, we were robbing their house.Marshal Garret Rooney: And because of the eerie circumstances, no one was looking for the truth behind their deaths.Craig Hirst: Right. When I could not carry the guilt with me anymore, I sent the letter and the tin to Father Seaver. But instead of contacting the marshals, he confronted my brother. He wanted to convince him that a confession would ease his mind. He had no idea what my brother is capable of doing. Peter had him kidnapped and interrogated, but so far he has not said a word about me or the metal tin.Marshal Garret Rooney: Father Seaver is still alive?!Craig Hirst: Yes, he is in a cave, 40 miles east of here.Marshal Garret Rooney: Lead us there now! You are under arrest but I will make sure the judge hears of your cooperation.
