The beginning of summer is the perfect time to renovate your house. So you decide to give your home a bit of a makeover, paint the kitchen and rearrange the furniture you have. It's best to start with the dirty work, right? You remove the wall between the living room and the kitchen, as you'd love to have additional space for guests there. When you break the wall, you find a cardboard box with dusty little glass containers. In these glass containers, you find fragments of cut and rolled-up pieces of paper.
Finish
You've spent the whole day trying to put the pieces of paper together. It seems that these are letters from many years ago. It is worth showing them to a friend who knows the city's history well. And who knows the city's history better than the bartender of the only saloon in town?

Very carefully, you put the letters back into the box and walk over to the saloon to show them to Henry.Hello, my dear friend. I heard that you are renovating your house. How's it going? I'm guessing you must be very hungry after such hard work. Oh, you found something? Let me have a look at it.Henry looks at the pieces of paper carefully, then he disappears for a moment. He comes back, holding glue in his hand.I think you've found some very old letters. They look like letters from war times... maybe. War is not only part of the history of a nation, but also the history of individual people. What you found might even make a good display in a museum. Some problems the soldiers and volunteers faced were similar on both sides of the fence... For example, check this one...
Finish
You take a letter from Harry and read:“Dear Eleonore,Tell my mother that I love her and I will be back soon. I know that it will be hard for her to forgive me for leaving without saying anything in the middle of the night. I am a young man, everyone in my place would have gone to fight for freedom. I'm ready for it. I am also very grateful that you take care of my mother.Do not forget me and make your own white dress before the end of the war.Your beloved,Bob”

Hi, I know that you are here to fight, but sometimes you have to help with other tasks. You've seen how our food supply got destroyed. Everyone with two arms and legs helps gathering food. And so will you.You go out into a nearby forest. With a bit of luck, you may find and shoot a turkey. However, there are also always some fresh fruits to collect or fish to catch. As you walk, your leg with the shrapnel wound starts to hurt pretty badly. So you take a break and read a letter from your loved one.“Dear Bob,Thank you for your beautiful letter. I wish to tell you that I am fine. But as you may have thought, your mother is far from happy that you've gone to war. She is so worried about you that she has developed a high fever. The doctor said it's very serious. Your mother may die before you get home. I am sorry, but I thought I have to let you know about this. Thank you also for the money you sent. With it I was able to buy some medication for your mother. My parents offered that your mother can live with us. I told them that you want to propose to me. Well, when you get back home, my father will be waiting for you in his office.Love, Eleonore”
Finish
You return to the camp with the food you gathered. Your leg still hurts a lot. As soon as you report to the doctor, you pass out.Howdy. You really wanted to go to war, right? Are you not too young for that? Well, war is over for you. The doctor saved your life, but unfortunately... your leg... He had to amputate it. I'm sorry, I really am. But you will live. Joe will take you to the train, you can go home now.

“Dear Maggi.I am doing alright. How are you? How is the baby? Do you have enough food? This winter has been very bad, but I hope you get along. I promise that as soon as the war is over, I'll come home and look after you. I cannot wait to hug our daughter for the first time. And I'm so sorry that I did not hear her first words...We have just returned from a trip into West Town, where I got a big amount of everything, also money. I send all my money to you, my beloved. We also eat here, and it is most welcome as we have been starving for too long. I wish I could be home with you and our child, and then we'd all eat together in the evening. However, I have to stay here a bit longer. The enemy still holds the position in the west. We try to get closer and surround their camp. A few soldiers went to a mountain nearby with our captain, to get a better overview. My dear, I wish I can hold you in my arms again soon and send you many kisses.Your loving husband,Kevin“These letters were so vibrant. With every word, you became a part of the story and were dying in your imagination. After you finish, you got so hungry that you decided to cook a three-course dinner for you and for Maya, who has finished painting the wall for you. Maya helps you and prepares the dessert.
Finish
Oh, these boys and men had very difficult times during this war. What a blessing that we do not have to fight in a war these days.

Henry: Hey, {PLAYER_NAME}! What are you doing here? Did you and Maya find any new letters?YOU: Yes, we found two more. One from a loving husband to his wife and another one he sent to his mother. Turns out this was the last letter he ever wrote. He was killed the day after. He wrote about how beautiful it was to see how the human soul works in war or other hardships. To see all kinds of people from different walks of life connect, help and care for each other. In his platoon was a man who was quite rich, always riding on horseback. But he behaved like everyone else and shared bread with dried beef with him. They were in the same unit for many months and fought side by side. And then he was killed when a cannon shot exploded right next to him. After the war, the rich man was looking for the family of his fallen brother in arms. They were living right here, in this very town. He knew his comrade's wife had been expecting a baby and when he arrived, the daughter was already born. He bought this house for them. The daughter grew up and married and her husband later became the founder of this saloon.Henry: Oh, I did not know this! It is a nice story. Well, tragic, but also beautiful. I think I'm going to hang up this letter here on the wall. What do you think?
Finish
In the evening, everyone gathers in the saloon. You read the letters to your friends and then you all sit silent for a long time, thinking about the people that lived here in the past and the difficult times they went through. And you think to yourself “What's so civil about war anyways?”.
